How To Gain Relevant Experience For Your Liberal Arts Career Search

Often times students and alumni find themselves in a tough spot when certain job applications have the dreaded “X number of years of experience required” noted. A lot of people think “How can I get more hands on experience for the job I am applying for?” There are in fact ways a wide variety of options and strategies you can utilize to gain experience in your chosen field, and demonstrate to future employers you have the experience and skills to be successful in the position you are applying to! Knowing the types of experiences available can help you determine which ones are right for you based on your interests and career goals.

Short-term projects for liberal arts majors can focus on research, creative endeavors, community engagement, or skill development, leveraging their strong analytical, communication, and critical thinking skills, including:

  • Research-based projects:
    • Local history analysis:Research and present a historical narrative about a local landmark or community event using primary sources from archives.
    • Social issue analysis: Conduct interviews and surveys to explore a local social issue, then write a report with recommendations for improvement.
    • Media analysis: Analyze the portrayal of a specific topic across different media outlets, identifying biases and perspectives.
    • Literature review: Explore a particular theme or author within a literary genre and present findings in a written paper.
  • Creative projects:
    • Documentary film: Create a short documentary on a local community group or issue, incorporating interviews and visual storytelling.

You can participate in studies abroad, SNHU experiential learning programs, or participate in virtual job simulations through our partner, Forage. These simulations are real case studies submitted by corporations across the country, and they are 100% free, open access, and self-paced. Company representatives will offer you feedback on your project.

You will find experiential learning opportunities for every major of study. Simply click ‘view all experiences’ and search for one that supports your career goals. With these experiences, you will be able to speak to the work you did within the simulations or other experiences in an interview, on your LinkedIn profile, and on your cover letter.
