The MCLB is a not-for-profit community and economic development organization located within the City of Dayton, and serving all of Montgomery County. Our mission is to reposition distressed real estate to support Montgomery County’s communities in building quality of life and vibrant neighborhoods, one property at a time. We offer various programs to address vacant, distressed, and abandoned structures, including demolition, brownfield assessments, site assembly, renovation, and new housing construction.

This internship offers a current or recent graduate hands-on experience in nonprofit communications, visual design, and public engagement. The intern will contribute to active projects while building skills in graphic design, digital outreach, community relations, and mission-driven storytelling.

TITLE: Intern, Marketing and Community Engagement

SUPERVISOR: Planning and Acquisitions Manager

TERM: 10 weeks (flexible)

TYPE: Part Time, in person plus field work

GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION

The Montgomery County Land Bank is seeking an outgoing and creative intern to support marketing, design, and community outreach initiatives. This position is designed for current college students or recent graduates interested in gaining hands-on experience in graphic design, marketing plan activation, public sector operations, and community engagement. The intern will play a key role in creating new marketing pieces for our organization, guiding our social media presence, and supporting community outreach events.

MCLB has a small staff of eleven full-time employees. Work hours are generally between 8 am and 5 pm.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Assist with organizational marketing.
  • Gain knowledge of the differences in marketing approaches with not-for-profit organizations.
  • Express creativity in print ads, web site designs, etc.
  • Build time management and organizational skills by prioritizing tasks and meeting deadlines
  • Gain exposure to land bank operations and the role of marketing and community engagement in supporting community development and relations
  • Improve professional communication skills through collaboration with staff and support of administrative functions

PROGRAM DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILTIES

Design

  • Design printed and digital materials including flyers, postcards, fact sheets, event signage, and social media graphics consistent with the Land Bank’s brand identity
  • Assist in creating and updating templates for recurring publications such as newsletters, program announcements, and property disposition notices
  • Support the development of infographics, educational materials, and visual explainers that communicate land bank programs, eligibility requirements, and community impact data to general audiences
  • Draft content for the land bank’s social media platforms, including property spotlights, program updates, community partner features, and event promotion
  • Research and recommend best practices for digital outreach to underserved or hard-to-reach community audiences
  • Develop and execute one mentored outreach campaign or communications deliverable — such as a neighborhood-targeted flyer series, a social media campaign, or a redesigned program one-pager — intended for actual publication or distribution
  • Organize and maintain a digital archive of completed design and communications materials
  • Assist in maintaining and updating the organization’s website with current program information, news, and announcements

Engage

  • Assist staff in preparing for and staffing community meetings, open houses, and neighborhood events, including setup, table staffing, materials distribution, and follow-up documentation
  • Participate in staff meetings, enrichment activities, and scheduled learning sessions as part of the internship program

WHAT YOU’LL EXPERIENCE BEYOND YOUR DAILY WORK

  • Tour featured land bank properties within the neighborhood context including a demolition site and newly renovated or constructed homes
  • Sit-in on community and/or public meetings to observe engagement in action
  • Introductions to partner organizations like local CDCs, housing nonprofits, and municipal planning offices
  • Professional development opportunities such as “lunch and learns” or workshops on fair housing, community development, sustainability, economic development, planning, and other related topics.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • Currently enrolled in a college or university program or a recent graduate (within the past 1–2 years)
  • Proficiency with design tools such as Canva, Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, or equivalent
  • Strong written communication skills and attention to detail
  • Genuine interest in community development, housing, or nonprofit work
  • Ability to manage time effectively, prioritize tasks, and work independently

Preferred

  • Experience with social media content creation or management
  • Familiarity with web content management systems (WordPress or similar)
  • Experience with community engagement or public-facing work in any setting
  • Basic photography or video skills
