The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) is responsible for the care, custody, and control of individuals accused of crimes or convicted and sentenced to one year or less of jail time. The Department operates 15 correctional facilities, including 10 located on Rikers Island, as well as two hospital prison wards at Bellevue and Elmhurst Hospitals. In addition, DOC manages court holding facilities in Criminal, Supreme, and Family Courts throughout all five boroughs. Each year, the Department processes more than 100,000 admissions and supervises an average daily inmate population of approximately 14,000 individuals.
Correction Officers, under supervision, are responsible for maintaining safety and security within New York City correctional facilities. Their duties include the care, custody, and control of sentenced and detained inmates; supervising meals, visits, recreation, and other group activities; inspecting areas for safety risks; conducting searches for contraband; completing reports and logbooks; communicating with other officers; issuing verbal orders; observing inmates for medical or psychiatric concerns; escorting inmates within and outside facilities; enforcing Department procedures; conducting inmate counts; verifying identification; operating motor vehicles; and performing related duties as assigned.
