The Teaching Intern Program at Exeter Summer is an opportunity to experience teaching at a residential school. Interns are paired with and led by an experienced faculty mentor who works closely with them, preparing the them to co-teach and ultimately teach independently by the second or third week. Interns will learn and practice the Harkness teaching method, a student-directed discussion. In addition to time with students in the classroom, interns will have separate meetings with their mentor and the Intern Coordinators.
Residential life is a key component to the Intern experience at Exeter Summer. Interns become part of a dorm team with experienced faculty who all work together to create a positive experience for students, many of whom have never attended a boarding school. Interns share in overseeing the residential program and live in dormitories in a single student room on a floor occupied by students and share bathrooms
Dormitory responsibilities include working with a number of advisees, sharing dorm duty on some weeknights and weekends, and establishing an adult presence in the residence halls. Interns will attend weekly Residential Life meetings for guidance, training, and support. Like all faculty advisers, interns will meet with advisees weekly to lead students in the residential life curriculum. At the end of the session, interns write comments about each of their advisees summarizing the student experience during the program. Interns will be assigned chaperone responsibilities and roles for off-campus excursions, on-campus activities, dorm social functions and student arrival and departure days.
